Naming or Renaming Places Without Government Approval Can Land in Jail or Fine

The naming or renaming of any places in Manipur without prior concurrence of the Government of Manipur is now liable for punishment of up to 3 years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to Rs. 3 lakh.

The new development comes with the strict enactment of ‘The Manipur Names of Places Act, 2024,’ which was published in the Extraordinary Gazette dated 15 March 2024 and came into effect from the date of publication in the Official Gazette of Manipur.

The state government has also constituted a committee for the State of Manipur pursuant to the provision of the Act, and the committee shall submit reports to the state government containing recommendations regarding the naming or alteration of names of places from time to time for the government’s consideration.

All concerned departments and authorities have also been informed to strictly adhere to the guidelines established under the aforementioned Act. Any violation of the Act’s provisions is punishable under Section 13 of The Manipur Names of Places Act, 2024, with imprisonment of not less than 1 (one) year, which may extend to 3 (three) years, and a fine of not less than Rs. 50,000, which may extend up to Rs. 200,000.

All administrative departments and Deputy Commissioners are requested to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of The Manipur Names of Places Act, 2024.
