National Seminar on Solid Waste Management Begins at Porompat, Imphal East

The Institution of Engineers (India), Manipur State Centre, in collaboration with the Departments of Environment and Climate Change and MAHUD, inaugurated a two-day national seminar on “Solid Waste Management: Innovative Solutions for a Sustainable Future” at Porompat today.

In his inaugural address, Manipur University Vice-Chancellor N. Lokendra Singh said Imphal’s rapid urbanization, poor planning, and encroachment have transformed the city into an overcrowded and unhygienic place. He urged both authorities and citizens to adopt meaningful measures, including introducing waste management in academic curricula, to safeguard the environment.

Director of Environment and Climate Change, Tourangbam Brajakumar, pointed out that 27 urban local bodies in Imphal generate large volumes of solid waste daily, much of which remains uncollected and causes severe pollution. He appealed for collective efforts to minimize waste generation and maintain cleanliness.

The inaugural event also featured technical sessions and research paper presentations on topics such as e-waste recycling, fish and agricultural waste utilization, and policy frameworks for solid waste management. The seminar will continue until August 23.
