National Sports University Holds One-Day Workshop on Anti-Doping Awareness in Imphal

The National Sports University, Manipur, organized a one-day workshop titled “Doping in Sports: Ethics and Regulation” at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex today to educate students on the ethical, regulatory, and health aspects of doping.

Vice Chancellor (O) Dr. Shyam Sundar Rath underlined the significance of doping awareness for students pursuing careers in physical education, sports coaching, sports psychology, and nutrition. He provided historical context on doping, citing early examples such as the 1954 World Championship and the 1960 Rome Olympics, to highlight the evolution of anti-doping regulations.

Olympian N. Kunjarani Devi, Padma Shri and Khel Ratna awardee, shared her sporting journey, recalling her start in athletics in 1978 and international debut at the 1989 World Weightlifting Championship. She cautioned athletes to avoid doping and uphold integrity, discipline, and fair play.

Registrar Dr. L. Dibamani Singh emphasized the serious ethical and health risks posed by performance-enhancing substances and highlighted the pressures that lead athletes to unethical choices. Assistant Professor Dr. Thumchuichan Raman welcomed participants and encouraged students to recognize their role as future sports leaders in India.

The workshop featured detailed presentations from Dr. P. L. Sahu, Director of the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), New Delhi, as well as Prof. A. K. Joy and Dr. L. Sobhashini Devi from RIMS, Imphal, covering topics such as “Winning Clean” and “Accidental Doping.” The event was attended by faculty members and students of the National Sports University, fostering awareness on promoting clean and ethical sportsmanship.
