Imphal, Feb 10, 2025: With the resignation of Manipur CM on Sunday and the subsequent Governor’s order on nullifying the state assembly session, a new wave of political speculation has been triggered over who may become the next CM of Manipur. Meanwhile, social media users in Manipur have brought out a list of BJP legislators and projected them as potential CMs of Manipur.
The latest development is that the BJP central leadership has reportedly summoned a meeting of BJP legislators on Wednesday, February 12. However, this is yet to be confirmed, as BJP sources in Imphal and New Delhi remain tight-lipped. Ahead of the reported February 12 meeting, BJP NE Coordinator Dr. Sambit Patra also met some key BJP legislators and held a closed-door meeting at a hotel in Imphal this afternoon.
Following the meeting, Manipur Minister Khemchand stated, “I’m just here to discuss how to bring back peace in Manipur.” Regarding a possible change in leadership, Khemchand said, “That will come after the high command process.” Though N. Biren Singh’s resignation as CM has been accepted, he will continue to hold office as caretaker CM until a new CM is appointed.
With political tensions rising, security has been beefed up in key areas of the state capital. The deployment of central forces can be seen across major junctions and the periphery of VIP quarters in Babupara, with heavy security and preemptive measures in place to prevent any possible unrest.
With speculation surrounding the formation of a new government and fears of President’s Rule looming, the presence of these forces reflects the volatile situation. As Manipur braces for what comes next, the eyes of the nation remain fixed on developments in the capital.
