Nationwide Protests Erupt Over Controversial Waqf Amendment Bill

A wave of protests has swept across India following the recent passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 in both houses of Parliament, triggering widespread discontent among Muslim communities.

The bill, aimed at revising Waqf property management regulations, has ignited fury amidst accusations of curtailing autonomy and infringing upon minority rights.

In Manipur, particularly in Meetei-Pangal dominated areas like Mayang Imphal, Sora, Lilong, and adjacent localities, demonstrators have taken to the streets in vehement opposition.

Organized by Pangal Tem (PT) Manipur, thousands gathered to denounce the legislation, viewing it as a direct threat to the fundamental rights of Muslims and a breach of democratic principles.

PT Manipur President Sayeed Alam voiced concerns during the rally, emphasizing the potential erosion of Waqf property autonomy critical to Islamic religious practices.

He condemned the bill as discriminatory and urged the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with Muslim organizations to address grievances.

Protesters waved placards bearing slogans such as “Withdraw Waqf Amendment Bill 2025” and “Down Down BJP,” underscoring their unified stance against what they perceive as prejudiced legislation targeting minority communities.

As protests intensify, the future of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 remains a focal point of contentious debate across the country.
