Nine British Universities to Open Campuses in India to Boost Educational Ties

In a major leap for global education, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that nine British universities will open campuses in India. Leading the way is the University of Southampton, which has already launched its Gurugram campus and is set to welcome its first cohort of students. Both leaders made the announcement at the CEO Summit in Mumbai.

This step will strengthen educational ties between India and the UK, in line with the objectives of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, according to agency reports. These universities will offer Indian students learning opportunities within the country while fostering joint research efforts between the UK and India, and encouraging partnerships between academia and industry to drive innovation and enhance skill development.

The largest and most influential delegation from the education sector so far has accompanied Prime Minister Starmer. “It is a matter of great joy that nine universities from the UK are now opening campuses in India. The Gurugram campus of Southampton University was recently inaugurated, and the first group of students has also taken admission,” said PM Modi. Five UK universities are expanding their global footprint by establishing campuses in major Indian cities.
