Normal Life Hit as Solidarity Closure Observed on May 3 in Manipur

Normal life in the Imphal Valley came to a standstill on Saturday as COCOMI (Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity) called for a Solidarity Closure to mark two years since the outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur on May 3, 2023.

Educational institutions, markets, and business establishments remained closed, while public transport services were suspended, with only a few private vehicles seen on the roads. The public widely supported the call, demonstrating a collective sense of grief and remembrance.

Security forces were heavily deployed in key areas such as Imphal City, Raj Bhavan Gate, Kangla Gate, and Officers’ Colony to prevent any untoward incidents during the day-long observance.

COCOMI also organized the Manipur People’s Convention at Khuman Lampak Stadium, urging people to pause daily activities and take part in the gathering. Similar conventions were also held in Yumnam Khunou, Kakching Khunou, and other locations.

The day will conclude with a candlelight tribute to honor those who lost their lives in the violence, reinforcing calls for peace and justice.
