National People’s Party (NPP) National President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said his visit to the state is aimed at helping restore peace in Manipur by assessing the ground situation and engaging with stakeholders on ways to bring back normalcy and long-term stability in the state.
“There was a very positive feeling among all party leaders to take the NPP forward. Many CSOs shared valuable suggestions on how the party could contribute to restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur,” the NPP Chief stated in a media brief this morning at Classic Grande in Chingmeirong, Imphal West, during his two-day visit to Manipur.
Sangma said discussions with political leaders, civil society organizations (CSOs), and other stakeholders took place yesterday and continued till late evening. Late last night, Sangma also met the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, to discuss the suggestions received and deliberate on ways to resolve the ongoing issues in the state.
Highlighting the party’s philosophy, he said, “The NPP has always believed in being a voice for the Northeast. Born in Manipur, today it has spread across the region and is the only national party formed purely by the states of the Northeast. While we maintain a strong organizational structure, we always listen to the people, respond to concerns at the state level, and act immediately.”
On the territorial integrity of Manipur, Sangma emphasized, “The NPP firmly believes in maintaining the state’s territorial integrity. Discussions can take place on administrative functioning, but completely bifurcating the state is not our stand.”
He appealed to all communities to focus on dialogue rather than rigid positions. “For many years, innocent people in Manipur have suffered. It is the responsibility of all communities and leaders to come together, discuss issues, and find solutions. Negotiation and compromise are essential to ensure lasting peace,” he added.
Speaking about his travel plans after the press conference, Sangma said he would proceed to Kangpokpi, stopping at Senapati and Tadubi, where he will meet CSOs from different communities in Kangpokpi and Senapati. He will also visit the residence of the late ICG in Maram Tadubi to meet the family of the former party president. From there, he will proceed to Dimapur, where tomorrow he will hold detailed meetings with NPP legislators and party leaders from Nagaland.
