Imphal, March 9 (Monday): Irengbam Hemochandra Singh, National Vice President of the National People’s Party (NPP), on Monday strongly condemned the alleged assault on a woman from Manipur and her transgender friend from Assam in New Delhi, saying such incidents against people from the Northeast must stop.
The alleged incident occurred on Sunday evening near the Saket District Court Complex where the victims were reportedly attacked by a group of men after they objected to harassment and racial remarks.
Reacting to the incident on the sidelines of the induction programme of new members of the party at Classic Grande in Imphal West, Hemochandra said such incidents were deeply disturbing.
“This should stop. Enough is enough. How long are we going to tolerate this in this country?” he said.
Speaking as a representative from the Northeast, Hemochandra said the issue should not be seen politically but as a matter of dignity and respect.
“I am speaking as a son of the Northeast. People from our region have contributed significantly to nation-building, and we should feel that we are equally accepted and respected across the country,” he said.
He also urged authorities to take strict and prompt action against those responsible, saying that only firm punishment would help prevent such incidents from recurring.
