May 17, 2025: The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) commemorated its 75th Naga Plebiscite Day with a grand ceremony held at its Council Headquarters Church in Hebron and marked a historical moment for the Naga community by paying tribute to the 1951 plebiscite. The event was led by NSCN Chairman, Ino Q. Tucco, who delivered a powerful speech emphasizing the significance of the plebiscite and the Naga people’s unwavering stand for self-determination.
During his speech, the NSCN Chairman also underscored the strained relationship between the Naga community and the Government of India, accusing the latter of continuous betrayal and suppression.
Jimmy Pamei, Editor of The Tamenglong Times, highlighted the role of local media in preventing misinformation and maintaining peace in the region. “In Tamenglong, Meiteis and Kukis live peacefully. Why? Because there are no rumours, no false sightings of violence. If there is no fake news, the situation across Manipur will also return to normal. Everyone wants peace and a normal life.”
Regarding the Framework Agreement signed on August 3, 2015, Tucco noted it was a recognition of the “unique history of the Nagas,” reaffirming their right to sovereignty. He expressed strong disapproval of the “common draft” proposed under the Indian Constitution, describing it as a plot to undermine the Framework Agreement. “We are no novices to the divisive politics planted by the Indian agency,” he asserted, vowing that NSCN would not accept any solution that compromised the sanctity of the 2015 agreement.
As the commemoration drew to a close, Chairman Tucco urged Nagas to honor the legacy of their forefathers who led the freedom movement with vision and sacrifice. “We stand for a sovereign independent nation, as declared on August 14, 1947, and reaffirmed by the plebiscite with 99.9% in favor,” he proclaimed.
