February 25: The Annual Sports Meet 2026 of the Naga Students’ Union Delhi (NSUD) commenced on Wednesday at the Police Ground, Kingsway Camp, near GTB Metro Station, under the theme “Celebrating Unity Through Sports.”
The four-day event, scheduled from February 25 to 28, has brought together Naga students and community members residing in the national capital.
NSUD President D. Sozio Mao delivered the welcome address. A special prayer was offered by Rev. Dr. N. Ricky Medom, Pastor of NCF Delhi, followed by a special number presented by Rojohne Vemai.
The ceremony was graced by Chief Guest Joram Maivio, Special Invitee to the Monitoring Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Member of the Bezbaruah Committee, MHA. In his address, Maivio congratulated the organisers, noting that hosting such a large-scale event requires dedication and teamwork.
Emphasising discipline and perseverance, he referred to the widely discussed “10,000-hour rule,” stating that excellence demands consistent effort and commitment. He encouraged the youth to reflect on the time invested in their personal and professional growth.
Highlighting the deeper purpose of the sports meet, Maivio said the event goes beyond competition and serves as a platform for building friendship and unity. He urged students to take pride in their Naga identity and heritage, encouraging them to learn about their history and honour the sacrifices of their forefathers.
Expressing concern over divisions caused by excessive tribal consciousness, he called on the younger generation to embrace unity and stand as role models for collective strength and solidarity.
The oath-taking ceremony was led by NSUD Sports Secretary MK Lovejoy Chothe, after which the Chief Guest formally declared the sports meet open.
This year’s edition features 10 teams, with two tribes combined to form one team as a symbolic step toward fostering unity. Football, volleyball, and basketball matches for both men and women began on the opening day.
Food stalls set up by individuals and organisations added to the festive atmosphere, transforming the venue into a lively space for sports, reunion, and community bonding.
