March 1, 2025 : Dozens of senior nurses at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, staged a sit-in protest on the institution’s campus against the “unbearable” monetary demands made by various unknown groups in the state.
Yumnam Sundari Devi, Senior Nursing Officer at RIMS, stated that despite being the largest medical institution in the state with a limited nursing staff, the nursing community continues to work with dedication, often managing a challenging patient-to-nurse ratio of 1:5. She added that due to the ongoing conflict in the state, the institution has treated a large number of patients.
However, Sundari expressed concern that many unknown armed groups in the state had not only demanded significant amounts of money from the nurses but had also issued threats.
She appealed to these groups to stop imposing such heavy financial demands on the nursing community. When asked why no formal complaint had been lodged against these groups, Sundari assured that they would be doing so soon.
