A visit to serve a ‘warrant of arrest’ turned fatal in the Ukhrul district of Manipur after the police officer who went to serve the warrant received a knife attack from the person for whom the warrant was issued by the Court of the Sessions Judge, Ukhrul.
The freak incident occurred on Friday, when the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Somdal Police Station, Inspector Krili James, along with some unarmed police personnel, went to the house of 54-year-old Firstman Rungsung, son of Kapangkhui Rungsung of Talui village in Ukhrul. While the OC of Somdal PS was trying to explain about the warrant issued by the court to the mother of the warrantee, Firstman Rungsung came out with a knife concealed on him and attacked the officer.
According to reports, the OC was stabbed in the chest and rushed to a local healthcare centre for immediate treatment and later referred to District Hospital, Ukhrul. The assailant also tried to attack other unarmed police personnel while they were trying to overpower him.
The assailant was overpowered and later captured when he tried to flee the spot, as a reinforcement team from the district headquarters under the command of the SDPO, Jessami, and the OC of Ukhrul Police Station rushed to the spot. Police sources said a criminal case under FIR No. 1(1)2026 Somdal PS U/S 109/118/221 BNS has also been registered against Firstman Rungsung for investigation.
