One Naik Subedar of the Assam Rifles was killed and three other personnel were injured after suspected armed miscreants launched an ambush near Border Pillars 85 and 86 between Saibol and Maringthel villages in Tengnoupal district late Thursday night.
According to reports, the armed miscreants opened fire from close range at the Yangoupokpi post, inflicting heavy casualties.
The slain personnel has been identified as Naik Subedar Shanker Ram, while the injured include Riflemen A. Rakesh, Sanjeev Kumar, and wireless operator Praveen Singh.
The injured personnel were evacuated to the Military Hospital at Leimakhong, where they are reported to be stable.
Sources added that the attackers fired from an elevated jungle area, indicating prior reconnaissance and coordination. Security forces have launched an extensive search operation in the surrounding hills.
Preliminary inputs also suggest possible drone involvement during the assault, though confirmation is awaited. No group has claimed responsibility yet.
