Feb. 13, 2025: A one-day open discussion on the theme “Save Panchayat, Save Democracy” was organized today by the Ad hoc Committee of PRI 2017 at the Manipur Press Club.
During the event, Kshetri Tama, the former Upa-Adhyakshya, Imphal East, expressed strong dissatisfaction over the prolonged delay in holding panchayat and local body elections.
She voiced her concerns that this delay has not only stalled crucial developmental projects but has also undermined the democratic rights of the citizens, leaving the public without proper representation at the grassroots level.
The discussion highlighted the importance of timely elections for the sustenance of democracy, emphasizing the need for an accountable, transparent, and effective system of local governance.
Participants called for immediate action to restore the democratic process and allow for the election of representatives who can champion the cause of development at the local level.
President of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), Bijoy Kakchingtabam; Retired District & Sessions Judge Aribam Noutuneshwari; and the Head of the Department of Law at Manipur University, Y. Premananda, also attended the event as resource persons and dignitaries.
