Relief materials have reached over 10,000 flood-affected families in Khurai Assembly Constituency, as MLA L. Susindro Singh launched a massive aid distribution drive amid ongoing recovery efforts following days of heavy rain and riverbank breach.
Essential commodities—including rice, dal, and other necessities—were handed out during a function held at the MLA’s residence in Khurai Sajor Leikai on Wednesday. Each household received a package of around 14 items aimed at addressing immediate needs.
“We are trying to ensure no one is left behind during this difficult time,” said Susindro, who has been closely supervising both relief and repair efforts across his constituency.
While aid distribution continues, the MLA has announced that reconstruction of damaged homes will be initiated without waiting for government intervention. “We cannot rely solely on state departments. Rebuilding will begin with the resources we have,” he said.
The recent breach of the Imphal River embankment near Khurai Heikru Makhong, triggered by incessant rainfall, led to severe flooding in nearby localities. Though the Water Resources Department provided a small stock of materials—just 90 bamboo fences, 40 bamboos, and 5,000 cement bags—over 150 local volunteers worked for several days to seal the breach.
Highlighting the lack of sanctioned government funds for critical flood protection infrastructure, the MLA stated that since 2017, all work on riverbank fortification—whether along the Imphal, Kongba, or Iril rivers—has been executed using his Local Area Development Fund.
He also appealed to residents not to tamper with earth mounds left along the riverbanks, stressing their importance in managing future flood risks.
In a firm message to encroachers, L. Susindro urged those with unauthorised structures along the river to remove them voluntarily. “If not, they will face demolition. These obstructions put entire neighbourhoods at risk,” he warned.
