Over 500 Prisoners Escaped Jails Amidst Unrest in Nepal

Amidst the ongoing youth-led fierce protest in Nepal, over 500 prisoners have reportedly escaped from jails across the country. With the continued unrest, the Himalayan nation is under a nationwide curfew.

According to reports, 572 inmates escaped from Jaleshwar Prison in Mahottari late Tuesday after a large group of protestors outside and prisoners inside jointly brought down the prison wall. A major news outlet in Kathmandu reported that a large number of protestors joined hands with the inmates to break the jail’s walls, and police were unable to intervene given the overwhelming situation.

The Nepal Army has appealed to the protesters to suspend their protest programme and come for dialogue. In a video message, the Chief of the Army Staff, Ashok Raj Sigdel, said it is the responsibility of all Nepalis to maintain harmony and protect the national interest.
