Manipur transgender activist Malem Thongam (26), who began a cycling campaign for peace in Manipur from Qutub Minar on October 2, 2025, has now reached Manipur’s Mao Gate, inscribed with “Welcome to Manipur,” after cycling from Kohima on Tuesday. She appealed to the people to support her peace campaign in reaching Imphal.
Meanwhile, the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) has asked the concerned authorities to stop the cyclist from crossing Kangpokpi district immediately, terming it a move that could provoke tension in the name of a mission for Manipur peace.
“If any untoward incidents arise in connection with the mission by Malem Thongam Meetei, who proposes to cross Kangpokpi district by cycle on the 19th of this month, COTU and the Kuki-Zo community of Kangpokpi district will not be responsible; rather, the concerned authorities will bear full responsibility,” said an ITLF statement issued to the press.
During the festive season, the Kuki-Zo community of Kangpokpi district is not welcoming any problems that could escalate communal tension, stating that they are a peace-loving community by birth.
Malem Thongam, who is cycling 3,000 km across India to appeal for peace in conflict-hit Manipur, hails from Maiba Khun Mayai Leikai in Koirengei, Imphal East, and is undertaking the campaign for Manipur’s peace.
