A peace rally demanding justice for late Khaidem Ongbi Chaoba was held today at Wangoi, organised by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Brutal Murder of Late Khaidem Ongbi Chaoba Devi.
The rally witnessed the participation of a large number of people from different parts of Imphal West district.
The rally began from Iram Siphai Leirak Ashangba and culminated at Wangoi Keithel Community Hall, where a public meeting was also held.
Participants marched peacefully holding placards with slogans such as “Stop Crime Against Women,” “Deliver Justice to Chaoba,” “We Want Justice,” and “Police Must Act Fairly.”
Protesters also raised strong slogans demanding a transparent and impartial investigation into the case.
The JAC stated that the rally was organised to condemn the brutal murder of Chaoba Devi and to press for swift justice.
The committee expressed serious concern over what it described as delay and lack of clarity in the investigation, especially at a time when crucial stages of the probe should be completed.
Addressing the gathering, JAC Convenor Chanambam Ibohal said that those involved in the murder must be identified and arrested at the earliest.
He questioned the delay in decisive police action and alleged that public trust was being eroded due to the absence of visible progress in the investigation.
He also demanded that statements of late Chaoba’s children be recorded promptly and properly.
The JAC further demanded a fair, transparent, and time-bound investigation, stating that the truth behind the crime must come out without any interference.
The committee warned that if justice is not delivered and those responsible are not punished, it would amount to a grave injustice not only to the victim but to society as a whole.
Following the rally, a public meeting was held at Wangoi Keithel Community Hall.
Representatives of various civil society organisations, including the Universal Mothers Organisation (UMO), Mayai Lambi Meira Paibi Singgi Apunba Lup (MALAMPAL), Salai Apunba Nupi Lamjing Lup (SANULAL), along with local clubs, women’s groups, and Meira Paibi members, attended the meeting.
