Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing Urges Union MoS for ICP and Model Town in Kamjong

Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing has urged the Union Minister of State (MoS) for Defence, Sanjay Seth, to establish additional Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) along the Indo-Myanmar border and proposed the development of a model town at K. Ashang Khullen in Kamjong district. The proposal aims to improve local living conditions and strengthen border infrastructure in the region.

The Union Minister was on a two-day visit to Kamjong in Ukhrul district, Manipur. Kamjong shares a 120 km long border with Myanmar and is home to around 45,613 people spread across 126 villages.

In his memorandum, the MLA pointed out that there are currently only two ICPs on the Indo-Myanmar border, whereas the Indo-Bangladesh border has 24 ICPs, despite both borders being of comparable length. He emphasized the need for more ICPs to facilitate cross-border trade, enhance security, and support development in the region.

Keishing also highlighted the need for urban development in Kamjong, proposing a model town at K. Ashang Khullen. The area consists of 54 small villages, each 5 to 10 km apart, and lacks basic urban infrastructure. Notably, the Kamjong district headquarters itself is a village with only about 800 households.

The MLA expressed confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and welcomed initiatives aimed at safeguarding the welfare of the indigenous people of Manipur.
