PM Modi Lands in Rio de Janeiro for BRICS Summit and State Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Brazil today on the fourth leg of his five-nation tour, marking a significant moment in India’s diplomatic outreach as he prepares to attend the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Modi was received with ceremonial honours at Galeão International Airport, where members of the Indian diaspora greeted him with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and traditional performances reflecting India’s cultural pride.

This is Modi’s fourth visit to Brazil and comes nearly sixty years after the last bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister. During his two-day stay in Rio, Modi is scheduled to participate in key sessions of the BRICS Summit alongside the leaders of Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa.

Discussions will focus on global challenges including climate action, peace and security, economic cooperation, and governance of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Following the summit, Modi will travel to Brasília for a state visit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The visit is expected to result in renewed cooperation in sectors such as defence, counter-terrorism, agriculture, renewable energy, and space. Sources suggest that India and Brazil are likely to sign agreements that could boost joint production and information sharing in strategic sectors.

In a social media post after landing, Prime Minister Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the visit, stating that he looks forward to “productive meetings and furthering our friendship with Brazil.” The Brazil leg is widely seen as the diplomatic highlight of his tour, highlighting India’s growing influence in the Global South and within multilateral platforms like BRICS.

PM Modi’s arrival in Brazil marks a continuation of India’s assertive global engagement, with expectations high that the visit will deepen bilateral ties and shape a stronger collective vision for developing nations through BRICS.
