A large number of members of the Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA) attempted to march towards Raj Bhavan on Monday, urging authorities to “Save Manipur University” and demanding immediate action on alleged irregularities at the institution. Manipur Police were stationed in significant numbers and stopped the protesters before they could reach the Raj Bhavan gates.
The protesters strongly condemned what they termed the “silence of the Chief Rector of Manipur University” — the Governor of Manipur — accusing him of failing to intervene despite repeated memorandums and requests for an appointment. The demonstrators demanded an independent inquiry into the reported irregularities in the university administration, called for the removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra, and urged authorities to put an end to favoritism and nepotism within the system.
Speaking during the protest, a KSA representative said they feared the Governor was “supporting those indulging in irregularities” by refusing to respond to students’ concerns. He pointed out alleged violations in the appointment of statutory posts, including Registrar and Finance Officer, asserting that the Vice-Chancellor bypassed the Executive Council’s authority and nominated subject experts “in his own wisdom,” in violation of the Manipur University Act.
The protester said they firmly believed that removing the Vice-Chancellor would pave the way for restoring transparency and fairness in Manipur University, adding that the rally at Raj Bhavan was intended to “open the eyes of the Governor” and protect the university’s integrity.
KSA stated that it will continue its agitation until necessary corrective measures are taken and accountability is ensured in the university administration.
