Police Disrupt Highway Free Movement Protest at Sekmai, Agitators Resume Stir

Police today disrupted the protest site at Sekmai Bazar where demonstrators had launched a renewed agitation demanding free movement along Manipur’s national highways.

The stir, jointly organized by Awang Sekmai Kanba Nupi Lup and Imagi Meira with support from the People’s Progressive Alliance Manipur (PPAM), began on September 5 and continued despite today’s police action, as agitators quickly resumed their sit-in.

Protesters alleged that Kuki SoO armed groups were exercising control over the lifelines of the state, barring Meiteis from free passage while allowing others unrestricted movement.

They condemned the restrictions as “war crimes” and “genocide by blockade,” accusing the Government of India of remaining a silent spectator.

Agitators reiterated that free movement along the highways is a constitutional right, not a concession, and vowed to persist with their stir until the right is restored.
