March 8, 2026 : Riding a Manipuri pony while carrying the flag of the All Manipur Walking Association (AMWA), noted women’s polo player Ahanthem Ngounu led a symbolic women’s rally organised in connection with International Women’s Day on Saturday.
The rally was jointly organised by the All Manipur Walking Association (AMWA) and Khongchat Ama D Khudam, and was flagged off from the Northern Gate of Kangla Fort by Additional Superintendent of Police Oinam Bembem.
Participants marched in large numbers before concluding the walk at the Polo Statue located at Marjing Hill.
The rally was organised as a symbolic Lamshang Khongchat (foot march) aimed at promoting women’s empowerment, encouraging youth participation in healthy activities, and fostering unity within society.
Organisers highlighted that the initiative also sought to honour the contributions and sacrifices of Manipuri women who have historically played significant roles in shaping the state’s social and cultural life.
Several prominent personalities and community leaders attended the event, including Dr. Phanjoubam Lanajit Singh, Chairman of Gyanratna Sahitya Academy and Celin Digital; film artist RK Hemabati; makeup artist Jenney Khurai; Iboyaima, convenor of the United Clubs Organisation; Deepu Potshangbam, president of Khongchat Ama D Khudam; secretary Lucas; trustees of the organisation; and AMWA secretary Odyssey Irom, among others.
Participants also included members from various civil society organisations, local clubs, women’s groups, and residents from different parts of Manipur.
Local community members, including women leaders, development committee members, and residents of Heingang and surrounding areas, extended support to ensure the successful conduct of the programme.
Speakers at the event emphasised that such initiatives not only promote physical fitness and social awareness but also inspire young people, especially women, to overcome challenges and contribute positively to society. They noted that commemorative activities like the rally help recognise the enduring legacy and resilience of Manipuri women.
Certificates and medals were distributed to participants during the programme by organisers and dignitaries present at the event.
The gathering also featured a brief entertainment segment by Kangleipak Magic, with magician Bishal Khumukcham presenting performances for attendees.
