Feb. 14, 2025: The imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur has attracted a lot of criticism of PM Narendra Modi and raised serious questions about PM Narendra Modi’s leadership and his government’s failure to address the prolonged crisis in the state.
Opposition leaders are now demanding answers from the PM, who has so far avoided visiting Manipur or presenting a clear plan for peace. As the N. Biren-led government gives up power in Manipur, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has accused PM Modi of neglecting his responsibilities.
“The BJP’s inability to govern Manipur has been exposed. The imposition of President’s Rule is a belated admission of their failure,” Gandhi stated on social media. “Has Modi finally made up his mind to take responsibility?” Gandhi asked, pointing to the BJP’s lack of concrete solutions over 19 months of turmoil.
Meanwhile, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh stated on Friday evening, “The PM is traveling all over the world but has no time to go to Manipur. And people are now asking why the people of Manipur are being deliberately ignored and insulted.” Jairam Ramesh also said the BJP has no other options; the CM has lost the confidence of his BJP and NDA colleagues, so he was forced to resign. In Feb. 2022, the BJP got a huge majority, but this is a direct consequence of the politics of polarization and divisive politics.
Now the ball has been left in the PM’s court. As Manipur is now under President’s Rule, all eyes are on PM Modi. Will he break his silence, take responsibility, and offer a roadmap for peace in Manipur? Or will the imposition of President’s Rule serve as yet another chapter in the BJP’s struggle to maintain control in the troubled state?
