The President’s Rule, which was imposed on February 13 this year in the state, is likely to be extended, as a resolution to extend the PR is currently being examined by a Select Committee, among other businesses proposed by the Narendra Modi government for the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament starting July 21.
As per the Constitution, a proclamation of the President’s Rule needs to get approval from Parliament every six months, and the present deadline ends on August 13, 2025. The intent to bring a resolution to extend the PR in Manipur suggests that the government doesn’t wish to revoke the imposition immediately.
During the session, the Appropriation Bill relating to Demands for Grants (Manipur) for 2025–26 will also be brought before Parliament.
The move to extend President’s Rule in Manipur comes amid the continuing security measures and lack of administrative normalcy in the state. With the ground situation still tense, the government has decided to seek parliamentary approval for its continuation.
Meanwhile, the session will also see the introduction of eight new legislative proposals across key sectors. Among them, the revised Income Tax Bill, currently being scrutinized by a Select Committee, is expected to be brought to the House for discussion and passage. The bill aims to streamline the tax regime and enhance transparency and compliance.
