The President of India, on her maiden two-day official visit to Manipur, witnessed grand exhibition matches of Traditional Sagol Kangjei and Women’s Polo teams organized to showcase the rich heritage of the game of polo in the State. The event began with a ceremonial reception of the President by the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, followed by the formal introduction of the polo players (Sagol Kangjei-Sanroi) and the women’s teams.
The event progressed with a high-voltage Sagol Kangjei exhibition match showcasing an exhilarating display of skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The occasion was further enhanced by an impressive band display performed by the Assam Rifles Band, adding colour and grandeur to the ceremony. This was followed by an amazing display of skills and sportsmanship in their polo match by the women’s teams. The President applauded all participating players in recognition of their dedication toward preserving and promoting the traditional sport of polo.
The presence of the President provided a major boost to the efforts of the State and security forces in promoting sporting excellence and preserving Manipur’s cultural identity. The event also highlighted polo’s deep historical roots in Manipur, widely regarded as the birthplace of the modern game, and reflected the community’s enthusiasm for traditional sports.
The programme concluded with the singing of the National Anthem by all dignitaries, participants, and spectators present at the venue, marking a patriotic and memorable end to the distinguished visit.
