Jan. 22, 2025: As per a high-level decision taken recently, any department, agencies and NGOs will now be required to take prior approval before organizing any event or activities in Loktak Lake and its associated wetlands from the Loktak Development Authority.
According to a press statement issued by Manipur Chief Secretary PK Singh (Prashant Kumar Singh), the decision was arrived in a meeting 14th January headed by Manipur CM N Biren Singh which was attended by Minister, MLAs, along with Chairman of LDA.
The said meeting focus on urgent need to safeguard the environment of Loktak Lake and address pressing challenges threatening its fragile ecosystem.
It also said, any activity initiated in the lake and associated wetlands without the requisite approval will result in accountability being fixed on the concerned officials or stakeholders. And meeting also adopted on sustainable practices and encourages the citizen and stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices and actively uphold the ecological balance of Loktak Lake.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister reviewed ongoing efforts to mitigate encroachment, reduce pollution, and address other environmental challenges threatening the lake. He also made a heartfelt appeal to the people of Manipur, particularly those living around Loktak Lake, to take special care of waterbirds, including migratory species, and to refrain from any illegal activities that could harm these birds or disrupt their habitat.
The meeting also set a clear deadline for finalising the determination of Loktak Lake’s boundary. The task has been entrusted to the Loktak Development Authority (LDA), the Revenue Department, and the respective Deputy Commissioners (DCs), who will carry out the process in consultation with the MLAs of the concerned areas.
