Protests Erupt in Thoubal District Over Modi’s Silence on Manipur Violence

Several protests broke out at various locations in Thoubal district on Saturday against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state. At the relief camp located in Wangjing Lamding Higher Secondary School, internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had fled from Moreh and Churachandpur condemned Modi’s silence.

They pointed out that even after more than two years since the ethnic clashes started in Manipur, the Prime Minister has never directly spoken about the crisis. Instead, he has remained indifferent, even though thousands of displaced people are still taking shelter in relief camps.

During a gathering at the Wangjing Lamding Higher Secondary School relief camp, Leishangthem Tamem Leima, a woman IDP staying there, stated that even after two years of suffering, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has never visited them nor spoken a single word about their plight. Rather than addressing the root cause of the conflict, he continues to ignore the people of Manipur, while families remain in camps. She added that it is shameful he chooses to turn his face away from reality.

The displaced people also criticized Modi’s visit to Manipur as a failure. They expressed deep resentment, saying that a leader who refuses to even speak on such a humanitarian tragedy cannot be considered as standing with the people.

Meanwhile, women meira paibis (torch-bearer women activists) from Khangabok, Salungpham, Sangaiyumpham, Thoubal Leishangthem, Thoubal Haokha, and Waithou also launched protests at different locations, denouncing the Prime Minister’s visit.
