Feb 26, 2025 : As the seven-day ultimatum issued by the Governor for surrendering weapons approaches its final day, volunteers from Pukhao village, located in Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency, Imphal East, have surrendered a significant cache of arms and ammunition through the Pukhao Meira Paibi to the Sagolmang-based Assam Rifles unit today.
The surrendered items included a 9mm Carbine with one magazine, a .303 rifle, a 12-bore double-barrel gun, a country-made rifle, five tube-launching IAs, one INSAS magazine, six unused .303 cartridges, eleven unused 12-bore shotgun cartridges, three Baofeng Motorola sets, one Kenwood Motorola set, three Motorola chargers, one 36 HE hand grenade, six 80 WP grenades, two tear gas grenades, one gas smoke shell, one mini flare cartridge (white), two 36 grenade fuses, five 7.62mm .303 rounds, three unused 9mm rounds, five .303 blank rounds, ten 5.56mm INSAS rounds, ten tactical vests, and three helmets.
The Assam Rifles said that this act of voluntary surrender marks a crucial step toward restoring peace in Manipur. Security officials have reiterated that such actions contribute significantly to stability and normalcy in the region.
With tomorrow marking the final day of the Governor’s appeal for arms surrender, security agencies remain vigilant for further submissions from various parts of the state. Authorities have urged those still in possession of illegal arms to comply with the directive, emphasizing that failure to do so may invite stringent action.
The ongoing disarmament process is seen as a significant move toward restoring peace and law and order in Manipur, as authorities continue their efforts to curb violence and maintain stability.
