Ratan Thiyam’s Death Highlights PM’s Silence on Manipur, Says Congress

Jairam Ramesh Slamming Modi for “Insulting Silence” Amidst State’s Cultural Loss and Ongoing Crisis
The passing of Ratan Thiyam, one of India’s most celebrated cultural icons, has not only plunged Manipur into mourning but also sparked sharp political criticism at the national level.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what he termed as “continued insensitivity” towards the people of Manipur.

Ramesh pointed out that since the eruption of ethnic violence and unrest on May 3, 2023, the Prime Minister has not visited Manipur nor met with any civil society representatives or political leaders from the state.

“Even after 26 months of agony, there is no gesture, no outreach,” he said.

Highlighting the PM’s silence following the demise of Ratan Thiyam, whose artistic legacy has earned global acclaim, Ramesh stated, “The PM has not even expressed condolences, not even a post on X. It is not just indifference; it’s an affront to the soul of Manipur.”
