“Reducing Plastic Pollution Is Achievable Through Behavioral Change”: T. Brajakumar Singh

As the month-long World Environment Day 2025 campaign wrapped up at the City Convention Centre, a powerful message emerged from the state’s environmental leadership: behavioral change is the key to curbing plastic pollution.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Director of Environment and Climate Change, T. Brajakumar Singh, emphasized that while a total ban on plastics may not be feasible, the battle against plastic waste can be won through mindful consumption, sustainable alternatives, and shifts in public habits. “Reducing plastic pollution is not just necessary—it’s achievable,” he asserted.

The campaign, aligned with the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally,” was led by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change and featured extensive awareness programs, community events, and competitions aimed at educating citizens and encouraging environmentally responsible behavior.

The concluding day’s events included a symbolic cyclothon from THAU Ground to the City Convention Centre, followed by a valedictory function where winners of various contests were honored.

Principal Secretary of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Arun Kumar Sinha, also addressed the gathering, calling for greater public participation in enforcing plastic bans and protecting vital ecosystems such as Loktak Lake, which suffers heavily from plastic waste.

The campaign concluded with a unified call for action, reinforcing that while policies guide the path, it is public will and behavior that will determine the future of the environment.
