In a startling incident that has raised eyebrows across Manipur, security forces apprehended a 23-year-old relief camp inmate who was allegedly involved in extortion activities along the busy National Highway-2.
The accused, identified as Hensonpiek Vaiphei alias Henson, hails originally from Singda Kuki village under the jurisdiction of Kangchup Police Station in Kangpokpi District.
He had been residing at the Thingkangphai Relief Camp in Churachandpur following displacement due to ongoing unrest.
Authorities revealed that Henson was caught red-handed while extorting money from the driver of a loaded truck near the popular Trends Mall area along NH-2, under Kangpokpi Police Station.
Acting on timely intelligence, a security team swiftly intervened and detained the individual on the spot, thwarting what could have been yet another case of unchecked roadside extortion.
During the operation, one mobile phone was seized from his possession, which is now being analyzed for potential leads and contacts.
Officials suspect that he may be part of a wider network taking advantage of the vulnerable security environment in the area.
