Residents of Heirok Stage Protest Against Eviction Order, Demand Scientific Land Survey

Villagers in Heirok held a sit-in protest at Heirok Market on Thursday to oppose the state government’s eviction order affecting their community. They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Thoubal, via SDC Heirok, urging the authorities to reconsider the order and conduct a thorough scientific land survey before any action is taken.

During the protest, villagers carried placards with messages such as “Conduct a survey before eviction,” “Stop selective eviction,” and “Eviction should be uniform and fair.” They stressed that the current eviction order appeared arbitrary and lacked proper verification of land records.

The memorandum highlighted concerns that the eviction process did not follow principles of natural justice and called for a transparent procedure that respects the rights of affected families. Residents demanded that any relocation or clearance only be carried out after a proper scientific assessment of the land.

Local resident Th. Shila reinforced the villagers’ demands, urging the authorities to cancel the current eviction order and conduct a fair, uniform survey. She emphasized the importance of a transparent approach that treats all affected families equally and avoids unnecessary hardship.

The key demands outlined by the villagers include: conducting a fresh scientific land survey, ensuring a fair and uniform eviction process, protecting the rights of residents, and cancelling the arbitrary eviction order.
