Residents of Lei Ingkhol staged a sit-in protest today against the government’s eviction notice, calling it inhumane and unjust. They raised concerns over the forced displacement of families without proper planning or support, highlighting the potential impact on the community’s welfare.
The protest was subsequently joined by at least 17 civil society organisations, including women’s and student groups such as All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation & Development Samaj (NUPI SAMAJ), All Manipur Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup, Nupi Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup (NLANL), Apunba Nupi Lup Lamlalongdong (ANUL), Nungchup Imphal Patloi Ima Apunba Nupi Lup, and the Thoubal District United Women’s Development Organisation-Thoubal Ima.
Other participating organisations included Ereiethak Irat Chanura Loisillon (EICHAL), Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Semgat Sagat Lup (KNKSSL), Khwairamband Phooibom Ima Keithel Vendor Welfare Union, AMUCO, United Committee Manipur (UCM), National Identity Protection Council (NIPCO), Manipur Peace & Integrity Council (MAPI Council), Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA), All Manipur Progressive Farmers Association (AMPFA), and the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU).
Speaking at the gathering, Nganbi, leader of Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL), criticised the eviction notice for violating the rights and dignity of residents, emphasizing that the order disregarded the hardships faced by the community.
Protest leaders vowed to continue their agitation until the government withdraws the eviction notice, warning that any forced eviction without a proper resettlement plan could worsen the humanitarian situation in Manipur. The participation of multiple civil society organisations reflects growing public discontent and signals a potential confrontation between the state government and community groups over the future of Lei Ingkhol residents.
