Imphal, May 17: The Paobitek Development Forum (PDF), along with local residents, has announced that a democratic form of agitation will be launched from the following day if the 6.5-km stretch of road from Paobitek Lamkhai to Top Upokpi is not repaired by May 25 this month.
The announcement was made today by PDF President Mahibur Rahman Thongkhongmayum during a press conference held at the Forum’s office located at Paobitek Mayai Leikai.
Speaking to the media, Mahibur Rahman stated that despite repeated complaints submitted to the local MLA of the constituency, who is also the Minister for Arts & Culture and Tourism, Khuraijam Loken Singh, as well as to the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West, the road has remained unattended to date.
He pointed out that within the 1.5-km stretch between Paobitek Lamkhai and Top Upokpi alone, there are three schools catering to students from Nursery to Class 10. In view of the hardships faced by students and the general public, he appealed to the Government to give urgent attention to the repair and improvement of the road.
He further alleged that the road has deteriorated not only due to natural causes but also because of incomplete and irregular repair works carried out in the name of road construction over the years. He claimed that even in March this year, only two truckloads of materials were reportedly used with JCB machines for temporary works, which, according to him, further increased public inconvenience and raised concerns among the people.
