Role of SHGs in Building Clean Villages Highlighted During EcoNetwork’s 36th Cleanliness Drive

The “Go Green Go Clean” campaign, spearheaded by EcoNetwork Manipur, marked its 36th edition on Wednesday with a cleanliness drive at Heirok Part-II Thokchom Leikai. The initiative, supported by local Self-Help Groups (SHGs), continues to promote sustainable waste management and environmental awareness in rural areas.

During the drive, SHG members collected plastic waste from the locality and handed it over to Ashok Traders for recycling. The collaboration between EcoNetwork Manipur and Ashok Traders has been instrumental in encouraging systematic plastic collection and responsible disposal practices across different locations.

Highlighting the value of such initiatives, SHG member Khundrakpam Ibem said the campaign has helped beautify the village while contributing to environmental protection. “This effort reduces plastic waste, protects health, and strengthens our ecology. Everyone must join hands, as protecting the environment is a shared responsibility,” she said.

She further noted that collecting recyclable materials such as PET bottles can offer villagers an additional source of income, supporting both financial independence and environmental sustainability. Ibem also called for continued awareness of reducing plastic use and promoting proper waste segregation.
