Sanitary workers play a vital role in building a clean and livable society. Their dedication and service are indispensable in making Kakching one of the cleanest towns in the country. Caretaker Chairperson of Kakching Municipal Council, Naorem Sanjitkumar, said that just as Mahatma Gandhi had envisioned a clean and self-reliant India, it is the sanitary workers who will be instrumental in realizing this dream.
The observation was made during a special programme organized as part of the “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign, held at the auditorium hall of Kakching Municipal Council. The campaign, launched across the country on the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from September 17 to October 2, coincided with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Addressing the gathering, Sanjitkumar highlighted that Gandhi’s vision of a clean India remains fundamental to nation-building. To fulfill this vision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the Swachh Bharat Mission in 2014, under which the “Swachhata Hi Seva” movement was introduced in 2017. He said the campaign is an integral part of creating a sustainable, inclusive, and developed India by 2047. Sanitation workers, he stressed, are at the heart of this transformation, and their relentless work must be valued and supported.
To strengthen their welfare, the Chairperson announced that the honorarium of sanitation workers employed by the Council has been revised under the new estimate in line with national standards, making Kakching the first council in Manipur to implement such a step. He further informed that during the recently held City Convention, Kakching Municipal Council was also recognized with an ODF+ (Open Defecation Free Plus) citation certificate, an achievement made possible through the efforts of sanitary workers.
As part of the programme, awards were presented to acknowledge their dedication. Naorem Ingo was conferred the Best Sanitary Worker Award, while Kshetrimayum Subash received the Best Driver Award for September. Gifts and incentives were also distributed to all sanitation workers and drivers to encourage them.
The event was attended by Caretaker Councillors, Executive Engineer Naorem Ramchandra, Assistant Engineer Salam Jugeshwar, Sanitary Inspector Naorem John, and other Council staff.
