A pilgrimage journey turned tragic in Saudi Arabia early Monday when a bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims collided with a diesel tanker near Medina, resulting in the deaths of 42 passengers.
The bus, returning from Mecca, caught fire immediately after the impact, leaving it completely gutted and making the identification of many victims difficult.
Several women and children were among those who lost their lives, with many of the passengers reported to be from Hyderabad.
Authorities confirmed that only one individual survived the crash — a young man seated close to the driver — who managed to escape moments before the flames engulfed the vehicle.
The Indian Consulate in Jeddah has activated emergency helplines and is coordinating with Saudi officials to support families and expedite formalities.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed deep sorrow and assured that India is extending all possible assistance.
State authorities in Telangana have also mobilised help desks to assist anxious families awaiting official confirmation.
