School Shutdown after Outbreak of Viral Fever at Sita Village in Tengnoupal

An outbreak of viral fever, particularly upper respiratory tract infection among school students in Sita Village, approximately 18 km from the Tengnoupal district headquarters, has compelled the school to shut down indefinitely after more students fell ill.

After concerns about the outbreak were raised by CSO and the School Management Development, a medical team rushed to the area and examined 153 students who showed similar symptoms. The CMO confirmed that all cases were managed with conservative treatment and that none of the affected students were in serious condition.

The medical team was headed by Chief Medical Officer Dr. P. Angkhong Rongmei and Dr. T. Angdung Maring, MO in-charge of PHC Tengnoupal, and included five others: one doctor from the 3rd Assam Rifles, along with a nurse, pharmacist, lab technician, and attendant. More than 70 students initially fell ill, prompting the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) to call for urgent medical intervention.

The visit aimed to contain the outbreak and provide timely care while restoring confidence among parents and villagers. The team also carried out awareness sessions for students, teachers, and local residents. Rapid diagnostic tests for typhoid and malaria were performed on selected students, all of which returned negative results.
