Security in the state capital and its peripheral areas was visibly beefed up as a preemptive measure in the run-up to India’s 79th Independence Day, with robust deployment of both state and paramilitary personnel on Thursday.
Personnel from the state police and paramilitary forces were deployed in Sangjenthong, Keishampat, and Kangla Western Gate, with frisking conducted in some key areas. Major streets leading towards the capital, Imphal, were also decorated with lights along the wayside for the celebrations.
Meanwhile, a statewide shutdown was called by a conglomerate of valley-based militant outfits, CorCom (the Coordination Committee), from 1:00 AM to 6:30 PM on August 15.
