Highlighting the unchecked discharge of untreated sewage as a major cause behind the alarming degradation of the Nambul River, a memorandum was submitted today to the Governor of Manipur seeking urgent intervention for comprehensive desiltation and rejuvenation of the river.
The representation was made by M. Raghumani Singh, President of Ward No. 6 United Club, Uripok, stressing that continuous inflow of sewage and waste has turned the river into a serious public health and environmental hazard for Imphal city.
The memorandum describes the Nambul River, once a vital lifeline of the Imphal Valley, as being severely polluted due to prolonged neglect, unchecked sewage discharge, silt accumulation, dumping of solid and plastic waste, and rampant encroachment along its banks.
It notes that the absence of proper sewage treatment facilities has resulted in foul odour, waterlogging, and frequent flooding, especially during the monsoon, while also contributing to the degradation of Loktak Lake.
The memorandum further highlights that despite periodic reports of cleaning works under various government schemes, the lack of a scientific, river-wide, and time-bound approach has rendered such efforts ineffective.
Emphasising that the situation violates the right to life and a clean environment under Article 21 of the Constitution, the Ward No. 6 United Club urged the Governor to direct immediate action, including stopping the discharge of untreated sewage, strictly enforcing environmental laws, and ensuring accountability of erring officials.
M. Raghumani expressed hope that timely intervention by the Hon’ble Governor would help restore the Nambul River, protect public health, and prevent recurring floods, while upholding the constitutional and environmental responsibilities of the State.
