Sit-in Protest Staged in Heirok Over Tronglaobi Killings

HAMP Seeks Immediate Government Action

Thoubal | April 11 : The Heirok Apunba Meira Paibi (HAMP) organised a sit-in protest at Heirok Keithel in Thoubal district on Saturday, condemning the recent bombing in Tronglaobi and the subsequent firing on civilians during protests that resulted in three protesters dead.

The sit-in was attended by HAMP members, local residents, youth, members of Heirok Apunba Club, and several children.

Protesters carried placards that read “Protect children’s lives,” “Punish those who kill civilians,” “Eliminate Kuki terrorists from Manipur,” “What is the use of a government that cannot protect women and children,” “We condemn Tronglaobi incident,” “Manipur cannot be broken,” and others.

Following the sit-in, a torchlight procession was held at Heirok Keithel at night to pray for peace for the departed souls.

HAMP advisor Khundongbam (O) Gunamani Leima said that if the present government cannot resolve a situation where Kukis fire upon and kill Meiteis at will, there is no purpose in having a government. The inhuman killing of two children by Kukis recently is deeply painful. If this incident is not resolved at the earliest, Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand should resign, she demanded.

She further stated that it is unfortunate that the Chief Minister says he can now visit Kangpokpi, but only with heavy security, implying that Meiteis must live in fear. If he is not afraid, let him visit Kangpokpi, Moreh, and Churachandpur once without security. Since May 3, 2023, Meiteis have been suffering greatly. If the government cannot resolve this, it must take full responsibility for the deaths of the two children and the three civilians. If the killers are not produced soon, the people of Heirok, together with all the people of Manipur, will launch stronger agitations, she stated.
