A 10-day skill development programme on “Extraction, Processing, Value Addition & Product Development from Pineapple Leaf Fiber” concluded on Tuesday at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Thoubal. The training, which began on August 20, was jointly organized by ICAR–NINFET, Kolkata, in collaboration with the farming community of Manipur.

The closing ceremony highlighted the potential of applying scientific methods to reduce agricultural waste and create new sources of income. Present at the valedictory function were Dr. Zeshmarani Sarangthem, Head and Senior Scientist of KVK Thoubal; ICAR–NINFET Scientist Naveen Jose; and Kh. Malemnganba, Horticulture Development Officer, Thoubal, who served as members of the presidium.

Distributing certificates to participants, Dr. Zeshmarani noted that the training marked only the beginning of efforts to utilize pineapple leaf fiber effectively. She announced that advanced programmes focusing on handicraft skills and technology-driven fiber production would follow, assuring farmers of continued support from KVK. She also encouraged participants to put their new knowledge into practice to enhance livelihood opportunities.

Presenting the training report, RK Lembisana, Home Scientist (SMS) at KVK Thoubal, emphasized that the programme taught farmers how to minimize waste and make better use of available resources. She explained that processed pineapple leaves could open up new income streams, particularly through the production of traditional items such as lengyan (shawls) and other local fiber-based products.

She further expressed appreciation to ICAR–NINFET and Dr. Zeshmarani for facilitating the initiative, stating that the programme had successfully created fresh avenues for rural entrepreneurship and value addition.
