Speaker Satyabrata Sends Commemorative Message of ‘Nupi Lan’ to People

In commemoration of the historic ‘Nupi Lan’ (Women’s War) Day in Manipur on December 12, the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Th. Satyabrata Singh, sends reminiscing messages to the people of Manipur, and to all the women of Manipur in particular.

“Today, as Manipur bleeds with division and unrest, we cannot afford passive remembrance. We must reclaim the spirit of Nupi Lan with unyielding resistance to injustice and unwavering compassion for our people,” the Speaker stated. He added that “May the lessons of Nupi Lan inspire Manipur to walk the path of peace and resilience, serving as a call to rise, resist, and rebuild.”

The Speaker said, “On this day, we invoke the fury and courage of Manipuri women who shook the chains of injustice. We remember the Manipuri women who rose against exploitation, who turned oppression into revolt, and who shook the foundations of colonial power. The Nupi Lan movements of 1904 and 1939 were not mere protests; they were explosions of defiance, demands for justice, and the birth of Manipur’s political awakening.

Their legacy burns within us as a fire that will never die. It reminds us that ordinary citizens, especially women, hold the power to bend history. The courage of Nupi Lan proves that when people unite, no empire, no injustice, and no division can silence their voice,” it said.
