Feb. 08, 2025 : The Speaker’s Tribunal of the Manipur Legislative Assembly has reserved its judgment on the disqualification cases filed against six MLAs of the National People’s Party (NPP). The decision was announced following a prolonged hearing today.
The six legislators facing disqualification are Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh of Kakching, Thongam Shanti Singh of Moirang, Irengbam Nalini Devi of Oinam, Khuiraijam Loken Singh of Wangoi, Sheikh Noorul Hassan of Kshetrigao, and Janghemlung Panmei of Tamenglong.
During today’s proceedings, the Tribunal granted the involved parties until 1 PM tomorrow to submit any written statements before delivering its final verdict. The hearing, which lasted nearly three hours from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM, included verbal submissions by the petitioners’ counsel, N. Bupenda, who presented arguments on behalf of the petitioners for approximately an hour.
Speaking to the media after the hearing, Bupenda expressed confidence in their case and reiterated that the petitioners had submitted sufficient evidence to justify the disqualification of the six legislators. However, the final decision now rests with the Tribunal.
The disqualification cases against these MLAs have drawn significant political attention, as their fate could impact the composition and stability of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. With the Tribunal set to pronounce its judgment soon, political circles in the state are closely watching the developments.
