FEB 15, 2026 (IMP): The CM Khemchand-led NDA Government in Manipur is likely to undergo a cabinet expansion, and speculation has mounted that it may take place within this week.
Insiders within the party say that a BJP central leader could be visiting the state to supervise the process and finalise the allocation of berths. BJP NE In-Charge Dr Sambit Patra has also emerged in discussions as a possible central observer to oversee the process, having played a crucial role in the formation of the popular government in Manipur.
Several MLAs are said to be currently lobbying for ministerial berths, which has reportedly prompted the central leadership to directly oversee the entire process to ensure balance and avoid internal dissent.
Currently, the government headed by Y. Khemchand Singh has two Deputy Chief Ministers, Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho. The Council of Ministers includes Govindas Konthoujam and Khuraijam Loken Singh, though no specific portfolios have been officially announced or allocated.
It may be mentioned that Manipur was placed under President’s Rule on February 13, 2025, following the resignation of former Chief Minister Nongthombam N. Biren Singh on February 9, 2025. President’s Rule was lifted in 2026 after the formation of a new popular government.
The 7th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly was held on February 5, 2026, during which the government led by Yumnam Khemchand Singh won the motion of confidence in the House, formally establishing its majority.
While the proposed cabinet expansion remains speculative, observers believe any such move would aim to broaden representation, formally allocate portfolios, and strengthen administrative functioning in the state.
