March 28, 2026 (TBL) : The first championship and coaching camp of the emerging sport of Floor Curling in the state began on Saturday at the Yairipok Tulihal Multipurpose Community Hall in Imphal East.
The “First Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior State Level Floor Curling Coaching Camp and Championship 2025-26”, organised by the Amateur Curling Association of Sanaleibak, will be held for three days.
The opening ceremony was attended by prominent personalities, including Md. Fajur Rahim, former MLA of Wabagai Assembly Constituency and Treasurer of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, who is also the President of the Amateur Curling Association of Sanaleibak, as Chief Guest; Thounaojam Rameshor, Senior Vice President of the Amateur Curling Association of Sanaleibak, as President; and Lt. Col. Hari Narayan Pal, Commanding Officer of the 7 Madras Regiment, Andro Army Camp; Mohd. Ajmal, Assistant Professor at Moreh College; Md. Wahidur, Proprietor of Wild Enterprise; Md. Najir Ahamed, Proprietor of Kanglei Sanapung Tulihal; and Md. Ajmir, a social worker, as Guests of Honour.
A total of 88 athletes, both male and female, from five districts of the state—Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal—are participating in the first Floor Curling Championship.
In the Sub-Junior category, there are 31 male and 10 female players; in the Junior category, there are 10 male and 1 female player; and in the Senior category, there are 31 male and 5 female players.
Delivering his speech during the opening ceremony, former MLA Fajur Rahim stated that Floor Curling is a modern sport that is beneficial for fitness and does not involve physical strain. He emphasised that this sport will be very helpful for the youth emerging in this era. He urged all the participating players to strive hard with the aim of becoming national and international champions and bringing glory to Manipur.
Senior Vice President Thounaojam Rameshwor said that Floor Curling is a new sport in Manipur. He added that this sport is similar to the traditional sport of Kang and believes that it will be easily embraced in the state. He expressed hope that many players will emerge to compete at national and international levels.
