Supreme Court Judges Visit Relief Camps in Manipur, Interact with Displaced Families

A five-member delegation of Supreme Court judges, led by Justice B.R. Gavai, visited relief camps in Manipur’s Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts on Saturday to assess the conditions of those affected by ethnic violence. The team met with displaced men, women, and children who have been residing in these shelters since the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023.

Accompanying Justice Gavai were Supreme Court judges Vikram Nath, M.M. Sundresh, K.V. Vishwanathan, and N. Koteshore Singh. Manipur High Court’s Chief Justice D. Krishnakumar and Justice Golmei Gaiphulshilu were also part of the visit.

The delegation first arrived in Churachandpur, where they visited the Sadbhavana Mandap relief camp. They interacted with the displaced individuals, listening to their grievances and understanding their struggles. Later, the team proceeded to Bishnupur district for a similar interaction with those taking refuge in relief camps there.

As part of the visit, Justice Gavai, who serves as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), virtually inaugurated a legal services camp, a medical camp, and a legal aid clinic in the tribal-inhabited district from the Mini Secretariat in Churachandpur. These initiatives aim to provide much-needed legal assistance and healthcare to the displaced population.

The visit underscored the judiciary’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis and ensuring access to justice for those affected by the prolonged violence in Manipur.
