Nov 12, 2025 (Aizawl): A suspected outbreak of a waterborne disease in Mizoram has claimed the lives of five people, and altogether 27 individuals (aged between 5 and 64) from Kakichhuah village in Lawngtlai district have tested positive. The district authority has declared a one-week containment zone.
Preliminary reports suggest the contamination originated from Salachhuah village in Myanmar, and among the five fatalities, four are from Salachhuah village in Myanmar and one from Kakichhuah village in Mizoram, according to reports.
The district authorities have declared Kakichhuah a containment zone for one week, restricting movement except for medical, election, and emergency services. Steps have been taken to ensure access to safe drinking water, improve sanitation, and raise community awareness.
The Deputy Commissioner of Lawngtlai, Donny Lalruatsanga, along with Senior Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lalmuanawma Jongte, has convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation and coordinate containment efforts.
